L.Frank Baum, with the help of illustrator W.W. Denslow created The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the turn of the century. Baum felt modern education rendered obsolete the fairy tales imported from Europe, with their inevitable “horrible and blood-curdling” moral punishments. Writing in 1900 he said his Oz would host a “modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heart-aches and nightmares are left out.”
