Universal Remotes

  • If boxes don't have an open, standard interface, can we route around them?
  • One solution is PC as the universal remote speaking IR. Most PCs speak IRDA. Could speak IR with a slight hack to widen beam.
  • Specialized devices exist that speak IR well. Example: Slink-E. A few PDAs do this, but no standard program interface, hard to do net+remote at the same time.
  • Databases of IR codes exist on net for specialized "intelligent" remotes. Good source is www.remotecentral.com. Best of breed of the intelligent remotes is Harmony EasyZapper, but even this fairly clueful solution operates in batch mode.
